Really can't wait for this game. Here's hoping D3's games are getting better, not worse. XP
Something I find funny with the press release though.. 50 exclusive cryptids? i thought it was more like 30 and the others were ones we've already seen like the Tapire-Iauara, Popobawa(yay), and atmospheric jellyfish like seen in the cool clip from this post.
Munya looks sweet. And I'm hearing Baron Finster is in the game... ::thumbs up::
By the way... now that the episode has aired... can we get confirmation that the purple/pink thing in this picture is the Buratsche al Ilgs?... cause it's well... pink unlike in the ep. lol.
http://cryptidsaturdays.com/gallery/v/events/nycc09/NYCC09+-+068.jpg.html
Nope. Not the Buratche al Ilgs. In fact, I have no idea what that toy is supposed to be! I can tell you with complete certainty that it's not a cryptid that we have appearing in the show. It could be Mattels' version of a 'Walking Stump', one of the stranger cryptid sightings I dug up, and a cryptid that appears in the game (but looks different than this).
The game looks fun!
I'm loving the new Secret Saturday Episodes - they're keeping me on the edge of my seat. The last one was too sad, but expected >_<
Very strange. Thanks for the input.
Even though it looked different (even compensating for the "ripped open" head), I had to assume because the playset is "Fiskerton's Train Chase" and so far all of the playsets have been episode based. All will be revealed in time I suppose, but this guy has had us all stumped for three months now... ::grin::. I'm pretty much convinced it's just a manufacturers mistake now, which is a shame considering the rest of the lines look perfection, but hey, it happens.
Are there any console-specific differences we need to watch out for?
Like exclusive cryptids or levels, that maybe I'll see something on the Nintendo versions that isn't on the Sony, or on the consoles that aren't on the handhelds, or even as specific as on the individual device?
Just so I've got an idea about which version to buy when it comes out.
(Judging from Agent Spectre's gallery, I should be able to play any one of them; I just don't have the budget to buy all of them.)
I checked the link Jay provided...but I didn't see an answer to that question. (I suppose I could take another look at IGN, or something, but I'd really like to hear it from the ultimate authority on the subject.)
Other than that, I'm looking forward to the game(s)!
And speaking of Specter's gallery....
Which picture were you asking about? The link didn't work for me, and I couldn't puzzle out which of the 94 different items was the playset in question.
And also about Spectre's gallery....
Amarok...cool......
(What? I've got a thing for wolves.)
(I know what's going on my Christmas list.)
Nicole,
I may not be Jay but I know I can answer your questions abut this. The Wii, PSP, and PS2 versions will all be identical. The only difference is the DS, because they have to program a completely "different" game for it based of the same story and levels.
As it stands right now... I'd just go with one of the higher end models so there's no doubts about getting the real story for the game, as sometimes it's thinned down in the DS version.
However if you want a "full" experience and have enough $... get one of the highends and the DS like I do.
There's only two things I don't know about the game that I wish I did. 1. I was maybe hoping for oldschool-arcade beat em up style 4 way multiplayer because of the difersity of characters. and most predictable of me (sadly). 2. Arthur Beeman cameo?
(btw, IGN is crap for real details, so don't even bother)
And the picture in reference was in the text of the link... NYCC pic 68. There are a few different pics I took that show off the strange creature next to the Fisk playset, but I think that one is the best.
Awesome, finally a preview of the gameplay action. It looks great and like it'll be tons of fun.
I think I'm going for the PS2 version due to not being a Wii owner. I have a PSP and DS too, but I kinda like my screen big when I play.
Now I can't wait until October! That seems like such a long time away now. XD
I also can't wait until next Friday. Weird World! Finally, we get a chance to see all the crazy/creepy/horrible/you can tell I dunno what exactly to expect anymore, lol! stuff Argost has in there?!
First of all I want to mention that while I occasionally post something here, I feel a bit weird about it... I treat it like a message board for discussing the latest ep, and just post a comment under the latest blog entry, which usually doesn't seem to be about an actual episode, but... about other Saturdays stuff that I have nothing to say about. Seems wrong, but I guess other people do that too. I just worry too much.
Now, about Target: Fiskerton. In the first scene was like, "I know that voice, why don't I recognize the character?" Then he put on the mask, and I was like, "Oh. Van Rook. I should've known that." And later, I enjoyed Drew admitting that they dated in college. I always wondered if his inappropriate flirting every time they met was just because she's hot, or if they actually were involved at some point in the past. It's nice to know, finally. But I do hope he was telling the truth when he said he's over her, in the end. I wonder if he could start dating an evil bounty hunter or something. (I also suddenly wonder if Drew Monday dated an alternate Van Rook, but broke up when she found out he wasn't evil.)
Well, also interesting to see Piecemeal again. And all the Fiskerton drama. And whatnot. Good ep, as always, and look forward to the next one.
Judging by Agent Spectre's response, I'll probably wind up getting the DS and one of the console version (budget depending).
I figured I'd get one of the console version no matter what, just so I can let my nephew play it without putting a $150 plus handheld system into his hands (I finally got my hands on a used GBA for $30 so I can let him play my older games, for that reason); it was just a question of whether I'd want to get another copy of the game.
"....(btw, IGN is crap for real details, so don't even bother)..."
To quote a phrase..."I said 'or something.'"
Um...did that link get fixed somehow, or does it have something to do with my computer (or browser)?
Because it's working now...and I'm not on the same computer as before.
Not to mention I was using Firefox 2.something and now I'm on FF 3.something.
(The earlier problem was that the link "ended"--for me, at least--at NYCC09+-+0
That kind of narrowed it down to anything under 100.)
I seem to have answered my own question, Agent Spectre.
I'm back on my own computer, and I've got the same problem with the link.
So it's either the computer (possible, but unlikely) or the browser version (more likely, though I'm not sure why it would cause that).
(Maybe I'll get a look at the portable FF 3.whatever...just to confirm.)
teknomage, I had the same reaction. It took me a while to realize I was looking at Van Rook.
I apologize to any Van Rook fans out there, but...once I realized who I was looking at, all I could think was "Drew used to date that?"
The prison jumpsuit didn't help.
Confession time: First time I ever saw a preview for Van Rook's Apprentice, I didn't know they were dealing with Drew's long-lost brother. I honestly thought it was some old boyfriend or something (first episode I actually saw was Twelve Hundred Degrees Fahrenheit, and then I saw Apprentice...and then Comcast On Demand came to my rescue for the rest of them).
I had thought the contact when he was asking for help (didn't hear anything, just saw him on a video) was an old recording from why he might have been long lost. I didn't even realize we were dealing with VR's apprentice.
So, given that (incorrect) assumption, my thoughts were as follows:
If Doyle had not been the brother, but instead, had been an old boyfriend....
Doyle with the mask on, cool.
Doyle without the mask, swoon.
Van Rook with the mercenary gear, cool.
Van Rook without...um, what? Drew...used to date...that?
And, finally, another strange reaction with "Target: Fiskerton."
Sorry if I didn't get precisely the right dialogue, but anywho.
"Change of plans. Bring the boy to the train."
"What? The boy? How did you...are you spying on me?"
"Yes, until you stop disappointing me."
You get the idea.
Several months ago, as in still 2008 (though I can't be more specific)...I had a dream in which almost that exact same exchange took place.
I say "almost" because...I don't remember if a train was involved in the dream. Otherwise, it was the exact same scene. I kid you not.
So...um...unless there's some preview I've forgotten about that might've shown back then.... Um....
Who's reading whose mind, now? Jay, a little help, please?
(Note to self: Start transcribing dreams of favorite shows. Pay attention to when the dreams occur...and take note if and when they appear on the show.)
Ha! I love you guys. Thanks for keeping the torch burning for the Saturdays.
Couple of quick points:
--I'm pretty sure the DS version has a few exclusive bonus cryptids. Not positive, so don't quote me on that, but I certainly remember designing some extras with that in mind.
--Van Rook may not be 'hot' to younger fans, but he does have a sort of George Clooney/ Sean Connery vibe going, but the idea is that he was clearly more dashing in days past before he turned mercenary. And Drew digs older guys.
--I don't recall any clips from 'Target: Fiskerton' ever being used in promo stuff, Nicole. Clearly you're just psychic!
And yet I haven't won the lottery.
(Maybe tomorrow; that would be a nice birthday present, now wouldn't it?)
Psychic or not, I do need to get into the habit of writing down my dreams.
I've had a few in the past that I've been very interested in using in my own fiction--though clearly I can't use that one, thank you very much.
Speaking of psychic dreams...any chance of some giant snake coming along and trying to "kidnap" Doyle? With Zak as the only witness? (That dream happened about a month or so ago. Though considering my imagination ran away with me once I woke up...I can't say how much else was the dream and how much was me.
Oh, he escaped; I just happen to remember a giant snake going after him.)
And if that does happen on the show, should I remove this post as too much of a spoiler?
Drew digs "older guys?" How old are these characters?!
Granted, I'm no judge of age, but Drew looks maybe around my age, maybe a bit older...and Van Rook looks more than old enough to be my dad. Maybe somewhere between "dad" and "grandpa."
(Maybe the mercenary lifestyle aged him prematurely? Should I wait for the day that Doyle, Drew's younger brother, looks old enough to be Drew's father?)
Okay, so such age differences do often occur in many cultures; that's not what got me weird about the scene. It's what he looked like that gave me that reaction.
Again...the prison jumpsuit didn't help the impression. Maybe if I saw him in "civilian" attire, I might be able to form a different opinion.
I was on Van Rook's side in some parts of that episode, though. Pretty much anything involving Piecemeal.
When he told Piecemeal "Everything you do disgusts me," I completely agreed. Poor, poor Van Rook.
I look forward to seeing how things work out, for everyone involved.
I think working for Argost is alot like working for the Joker: you can never be sure if he'll make you rich, or kill you himself. After this latest job, I kinda hope Van Rook will not only be over Drew, but also quit taking jobs for Argost. I'm sure he can do well for himself as a free agent, especially if his jobs don't involve the Saturdays in any way (kind of like how I think Jessie, James, and Meowth would pull off alot more schemes if they didn't have to fight the twerps all the time).
"--I'm pretty sure the DS version has a few exclusive bonus cryptids. Not positive, so don't quote me on that, but I certainly remember designing some extras with that in mind."
Thanks... It's probably true. the DS versions of D3Publisher's games have a habit of doing that. Since they aren't "up to par" with the bigger console versions they normally add little extras.
Nicole, I've had very similar experiences in my dreams, however in much more subtle ways. Though mine are normally visions from a year in advance... @_@
Nothing Saturdays yet though... unless you count the action figure ones I've had... but I have no idea how that relates to anything in any way other than I was technically having dreams about Beeman and Cheechoo (and Cryptids that have actually appeared on the show)as figures back in like, last June/July. *nudges mattel hard*
Van Rook doesn't look that old. What does it matter anyway? He's awesome. Again not my type of antagonist, but I can dig it... totally awesome.
Drew is in her late '30's, she's just in great shape. Doc is mid-'40's and Van Rook late-40's. Drew would've dated Leonidas before she met Doc, in her early '20's, when he was around 32 years old. Not too creepy, really.
Ah, okay.
It didn't really matter that much, and I did say I'm not that good a judge of age. Of course, the characters being cartoons makes a difference, too.
(However, from Jay's response, Van Rook would still be about old enough to be my dad...and so would Doc...almost.)
In spite of my reaction, I sometimes wonder if Drew's reaction to his flirting is sort of...overreacting. (But then, she's saying he's disgusting because of his personality and job priorities, not his looks, so I can understand it. And of course, she wouldn't want Doc to think she likes other guys flirting with her. Even though that was the impression I got in Ellef Rignes.... It seriously looked like Dr. Cheechoo was trying to flirt with her. I suppose being in mortal danger does strange things to people...or I'm just imagining things.)
Now I'll try to adjust my "shut up" filter to include the question of age. (It was in the shop during that whole mess I made of the other blog; I just got it back and I still need to recalibrate it.)
Hey, teknomage, so I'm not the only Pokemon fan here! Cool!
But...I want to see Van Rook keep flirting with Drew! I enjoy watching that. That's one of his character traits, one of the ways he enjoys antagonizing them. He wouldn't be Van Rook without that.
Oh--Dr. Cheechoo. Almost forgot I wanted to ask this.
Dr. Cheechoo's name is...Cheechoo (of course).
Our first meeting with him was on Ellef Rignes, dealing with certain "Inuit" burial mounds. (Formerly called "Eskimo"? Yes? No? Help me out here, please.)
According to Wikipedia's dictionary (and their source, someone's site on Fairbanks), the Chanook (or Chinook?) word "cheechako" means someone new to Alaska. It's found on the Wiktionary's "words for outsiders" page.
Is this a coincidence, or not?
Wait, Drew said they dated in college, right? And Leonidas was around 32? Was he a student at the time, himself? Or a professor? Or did she just mean she was in college, but not him?
Nicole: Eskimos and Inuit are different. "Inuit" can refer to various native peoples in Canada and Greenland (formerly called "Eskimo," now considered derogatory in those countries), but "Eskimo" is still used in Alaska and Siberia, to include Yupik and Inupiat. (Wikipedia is our friend.)
Thank you, teknomage.
I'd only mentioned the term to suggest a possible connection between Paul's name and the language--a theory which requires input from Jay (or anyone else on his team) to confirm or deny; I had no idea if there was any other connection between the cultures involved in that theory.
I had assumed (I know, never assume) that "Eskimo" was merely an umbrella term for many cultures (like Native American/American Indian for the vast number of tribes), though now that you mention it, I do vaguely recall reading somewhere that some would consider it derogatory. Though I can't seem to figure out where I read that.
I seem to have problems remembering stuff like that, at times.
(I've never been very good at political correctness, and since I don't mean it as a derogatory term, that kind of affects my ability to remember how other people might interpret my words.)
Sigh.
I need to get out more often.
Paul Cheechoo is a Canadian Inuit secret scientist. And the reason we stopped using the term 'Eskimo' in Canada is that it is considered to be a racist slur by some of the people it was meant to describe. The word Eskimo means, literally, 'eater of raw fish', which might be considered to be a derogatory reference, sort of like calling someone a 'savage'.
(Wince)
Ouch.
Yeah, I saw that definition on Wikipedia...after I wrote that post.
And while I meant it as an umbrella term...as I've read elsewhere, "local customs rule."
Or something like that.
Which in this instance means that those to whom the term refers are the ultimate authority on whether it's acceptable.
Okay. Dr. Cheechoo is Inuit. Thank you.
Personally, I enjoy a little raw fish now and then, as long as it involves vinegared rice and is wrapped in nori...
Nori, huh?
I've tried seaweed a couple of times in the past (twice or thrice with sushi, once with ramen, and at least twice on its own).
I think all but one time (and that when I was in, what, first grade?), I found the flavor was a little too strong.
I wonder if I'm using the wrong kind (I think it was kelp), or if that's just one of those personal taste things?
Or maybe I need that vinegared rice; I think it was just white sticky rice the other times I tried it.
The fish was no problem, though; just a matter of getting used to it.
And it was a really weird feeling, trying to eat an octopus tentacle and having all those suckers clinging to my tongue.
As to my original question about Dr. Cheechoo's name:
Since he's a Canadian Inuit, I will assume...er, presume...I mean....
I will accept that as meaning that any connection between his name and the word I dug up is either entirely coincidental or completely within my imagination.
Unless, of course...no, wait, Alaska belonged to Russia before it became one of the 50 states, so that wouldn't count, either.
Anywho, no connection, unless the author says otherwise.
Good?
Once More the Nightmare Factory: Pretty cool ep, though isn't Drew's sword only supposed to power up in the sunlight? She sure was doing alot of blasting in Weirdworld, which was fairly lacking in sunlight, real or artificial... anyway, I look forward to seeing Doyle train Zak...
I love the new SS episodes. I'm dying to know Argost's backstory.
I loved his military uniform in the Once More the Nightmare Factory episode. The game cover looks interesting.
Oh, also about this ep, I meant to say for a second there I was concerned about Doyle withholding information from the Saturdays, but like 2 seconds later my concerns were allayed by what he said to Fisk.
Also, Doc had a line that I liked so much, I made it into a siggy.
http://absolutelypointless.net/siggy/docsig.gif
I too must repeat how much I loved the Nightmare Factory episode. And Argost's temporary change of outfit. XD
Weird World is both awesome and deadly.
I loved Zak's line "Why does everything cool try to kill me?!" as well as Doc's line Technomage posted. :D
The huge 'crab-topus' thing is called the Migas, right? And the little fluffy/spiney porcupine-like lizard was the Peluda?
Argost reminds me of the Crypt-Keeper from both the comic and television versions of Tales from the Crypt. I'm ashamed to admit it, but he was the only reason why I became interested in the Secret Saturdays. I enjoy Corey Burton's voice work as Argost and Van Rook.
Jay,
What does the V.V. stand for in Argost's name?
I'm hoping to see a Drew and Van Rook flashback in a future episode.
Drew does look like she is in great shape. I love my parents, but If I had to choose different ones, I would choose them.
Like others have said (maybe not here) I like Munya. He was so funny doing his 'behind the scenes' work. He was just nonchulantly eating some bigs while trying to kill his boss's enimies. Ahhhh that's the life....
I am EXTREAMLY excited about the new game! When I saw it on the blog I screamed so loud, my dad ran up the stairs to make sure there wasn't some bad guy in the room. Though, if Argost had come in my room, I'd be scared, but flattered. I have a Wii and a DS. I called my mom and told her and she asks me which one I want to get. I'm like uh... both? She says that's what I think. I'll find a way to get both....
It's only Sunday adn i can't wait for next week. I'm really excited for next weeks episode. The Curse of The Stolen Tiger. I think that Wadi is supposed to come back (am I right Mr. Stephens?) and that should be interesting... My computer background is actually Zak's pants falling down due to Wadi's 'finding' his belt.
I am a BIG HUGE fan of this show. I was on Wikipidea and I noticed the last episode is the show-down with Argost for Kur. I am really hoping the show continues to a 3rd season or I just might move to Canada to watch it and/or beg for more.
Thanks for the props, gang. Let me try and quickly answer some questions...
-Wadi returns this Friday in 'Curse of the Stolen Tiger', along with an updated bad guy from an early episode.
-Argost's full name is Vincent Vladislav Argost. And the absolutely stunning Corey Burton brought him to horrible life far better than I even imagined.
-The cryptid that throws Doc out at the end is indeed the Migas. And, yes, the spiky lizard thing is an infant Peluda.
-There are ten more episodes to come (so far) AFTER the final showdown with Kur in episode 26. Prepare to have your minds blown!
Indeed the latest episode blew my mind already (Weird World is my dream home)... but even more so would be Jay's revelation of Argost's full name. Thank you, thank you!!
Jay,
Thank you for answering my Argost question.
Corey Burton is very kind. I loved his voice work as Van Rook in the Ellef Rignes episode in particular.
What were your inspirations for creating V.V. Argost and Leonidas Van Rook?
